How to become a St Dunstaner
St Dunstan’s goal is to help as many blind ex-Service men and women as possible to lead rewarding and independent lives. Since 2000, we have welcomed not just those who lost their sight through warfare, but anyone who has ever served in the Armed Forces and has experienced serious loss of sight since.
Could you be a St Dunstaner?
If you think you (or someone you know) may be eligible to become a St Dunstaner, please read the criteria set out below. If you qualify, simply follow the link to find our admissions leaflet and details of who to contact.
We support the Emergency Services too
St Dunstan’s created the Diana Gubbay Trust to benefit men and women in the Emergency Services (Police, Fire and Ambulance) who suffer severe loss of vision while on duty. The ophthalmic criteria are the same as for St Dunstan’s. For details please see ('Our Admissions Criteria')
The application process
Follow these steps to apply:
- Contact our admissions office (see below) for your application form
- Once you’ve filled in the form, your Service records office and your ophthalmic consultant will be contacted for reports (this process takes about 10 weeks)
- You may be invited to visit our ophthalmic clinic in London to see our consultant (alternative arrangements can be made if travel is difficult)
- If you are successful, you will be invited to become a St Dunstaner
First acceptance process
Once you have been accepted, you will be visited at home by one of our regional Welfare Officers. They will assess your needs, offer advice and may suggest a visit to one of our centres at Ovingdean or Sheffield. Recommendations may include training in mobility, independent living skills, IT or simply enjoying the company and encouragement of other St Dunstaners in similar situations.
We don’t forget the family
The needs of family members are also important and we always take them into account. Relatives are encouraged to visit our centre at Ovingdean to find out more.
