St Dunstan’s is pleased to announce that planning and Listed Building applications for the refurbishment of the former North Wales medical Centre in Llandudno have now been approved by Conwy Council and Welsh heritage body, Cadw.

Due to the listed status of the building and scale of the project, the planning process has taken nearly a year. We are delighted to now be in a position to progress with the refurbishment which will involve converting the building to offer a full range of services and facilities meeting the needs of those who have lost their sight. As do our Centres in Ovingdean, Brighton and Sheffield, the new Centre will feature rehabilitation and training areas to teach independent living skills such as getting around safely, navigating a kitchen and using a computer. It will also include specially adapted leisure, dining and accommodation facilities catering for everything from a residential training week, to respite care.

Robert Leader, Chief Executive of St Dunstan’s said, ‘We hope to start work with our selected contractor next Spring and estimate that it will take fourteen to twenty months to complete. The Llandudno Centre will enable us to reach ever great numbers of St Dunstaners, building their confidence and the skills required to lead full and independent lives.’

St Dunstaner and Llandudno resident, Keith Roberts said of the development, ‘The new Centre will make a huge difference to St Dunstaners attending. The practical and emotional support offered helps them realise that life is not over because they cannot see; they can still enjoy many of the activities a sighted person can.’

The next stage is to identify suitable contractors who can be short listed and invited to submit tenders.  We have been greatly encouraged by the overwhelming support from the local community welcoming our presence in the area. We will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.
